Digital fluid power systems are characterized by the presence of fast transients due to the switching of valves. In the ideal case the switching between two states such as an open or closed valve or a cylinder chamber connected to the pressure or the tank line is infinitely fast. This ideal behaviour cannot be reached by real systems, giving rise to transient effects that are often seen as unwanted deviations from the simple on/off principle of digital fluid power. However, as the transient effects cannot be avoided, the question arises whether the transients can be exploited to improve the system performance.
This paper shows the influence of transmission line dynamics in a system controlled by a digital flow control unit. A simulation study reveals the potential of smoothing the actuator behaviour by carefully designing the interconnections between the system components in a way to filter out some of the noise introduced by the fast switching processes.
