Fast switching hydraulic systems are used both in established technologies like common rail fuel injection as well as in a number of new developments like digital
displacement pumps and hydraulic switching converters. Compared to valve or displacement controlled servo systems, the fast switching technology imposes new demands on mathematical modelling and control design. Due to the high operating frequencies the wave propagation phenomenon becomes important even at moderate length scales in the order of magnitude of 0.1 m. This paper uses a fast switching system, the hydraulic buck converter, as an example for showing the new possibilities in control design and the demands on the modelling side.
