The analysis of interatomic distances in complex transition metal chalcogenides of type Am[TnSp] (A, alkali or alkaline earth metal; T, mainly Fe, Cu) can furnish interesting information on the oxidation state of the metal and also of sulfur. The charge distribution in complex anions can be estimated. Structural problems of the accommodation of the cations in framework structures leading to disorder can be detected.
