Original Kurzfassung:
In order to analyze the acoustic field of ultrasonic
transducers used for medical diagnostic purposes the optical
diffraction patterns due to the propagating pressure waves in
water are optically analyzed through ultra short laser pulses
diffracted by the acoustic waves. The diffracted laser light is
optically preprocessed (filtered) in the Fourier–plane of an optical
system and projected onto a CCD–camera. Using this technique
it is possible to measure and characterize the ultrasound–field in
a rather short time interval, which would otherwise last hours or
days using the standard method of measuring the intensity in a
large number of points in three dimensions with a hydrophone.
Additionally the phase–information of the ultrasonic wave is
acquired easily that way.
