In the proposed paper an approach of a diffraction tomography system suitable for multiple strongly scattering, translucent materials using red light will be introduced. To bypass the widely known disadvantages of ionizing radiation of conventional tomographical systems, the research of soft tissue imaging systems utilizing low energy and thus harmless but still sufficiently penetrating light radiation has been pushed. Visible
and near infrared (NIR) wavelengths between 600 and 1000 nm are typically chosen for medical applications which mainly comprise female breast tissue examination for malignant masses.
Our work is motivated by the desire to evolve a noninvasive technique for 3d-detection of inhomogeneities in otherwise prevailing homogeneous substances like translucent plastics, foams, fluids and many biological materials without prior knowledge of the exact optical parameters.
A light intensity modulation technique is employed to archieve imaging of absorption variations within the investigated volume by merely onesided scanning of the specimen giving an insight of more than 20 mm depth.
For the reconstruction of the tomographical images out of a series of measurements the propagation of the photons is modeled by a diffusion approximation to the Boltzmann transport equation.
