Due to the fact that knowledge based systems have proved their applicability in limited operational areas with success, they meanwhile push intensively from science and development to industrial ranges of application. Also on the field of construction computer aided knowledge engineering offers new possibilities and a new understanding of problem solving.
This paper describes the prototype of a knowledge based system in the field of the production of specialized equipment for the deformation of various kinds of materials. The system has been developed to assist technical designers in contructing the basic profile contour and the varied contours of the stages of deformation. The prototype has been implemented in LISP and C and is integrated in the graphics system AutoCAD.
PROFILEX does currently represent a powerful tool of development for the designer, which helps to reduce routine work and to raise the speed and the precision of profile design.
