During the last years a broad spectrum of different Web-based tourism information systems (TIS) has been established. The acceptance and consequently the competitiveness of a TIS is mainly determined by the quantity and quality of data it provides. Most existing TIS already try to fulfil the tourists request for an extensive data collection. Moreover, tourism industry now realised also the potential to increase data quality by providing individual and specialised information about tourism objects. For this, appropriate search as well as presentation features are required. The advantage of individual information presentation is twofold. It increases the quality of information and on the same time it decreases the amount of data presented to the user. In order to cope with these demands, in this paper concepts of learning systems are applied to tourism information systems. Cognitive styles are used to describe the preferred way of information processing of each user (tourist). A rule system covers meta information about the mapping of user profiles in combination with cognitive styles and the corresponding query results of a specific TIS. Information presentation depends on the individual preferences and user skills, thus satisfying the specific expectations.
