Frequency response methods are a good choice for the design of linear and time invariant control systems. This kind of design contains simple, graphical considerations for SISO systems as well as optimization based methods for MIMO systems. The result may be a good choice for the parameters of a given structure of a controller or even the optimal structure itself. The conception of transfer functions offers an elegant algebraic description of the input output behavior of dynamic systems. With the help of these functions and especially with the frequency responses one has a simple graphic representation of the input output map of a dynamic system at one's disposal, which you can measure easily. Therefore a goal of research is to enlarge some of these methods and results to a broader class of dynamic systems.
