The bass René Pape is one of the most outstanding singers of a new generation of opera-singers. He was born in Dresden (Germany) in 1964. In 1988 he was engaged by the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin which became his musical home. René Pape was discovered by the conductor Sir Georg Solti in 1990 and he started a career in the most famous opera-houses of the world: Bayreuth, Berlin, Chicago, Munich, New York, Paris, Salzburg, Vienna etc. in leading rôles from Mozart (Sarastro/Magic Flute, Leporello/Don Giovanni, Figaro/The Marriage of Figaro), Beethoven (Rocco/Fidelio), Bizet (Escamillo/Carmen) to Wagner (King Marke/Tristan und Isolde, King Heinrich/Lohengrin). In summer 2000 René Pape was named “Berliner Kammersänger“ and in 2001 the journal Musical America elected him “Vocalist of the Year“.
