Referring to the works of Michael Polanyi and Gilbert Ryle the article gives a sketch of what the "tacit knowing view" is all about and questions the intellectualistic and objectivistic view of knowledge. In doing so different meanings of the term "tacit" and different types of tacit knowledge are distinguished. Finally, some implications for the process of acquisition of knowledge are discussed.
