This contribution is concerned with the controller design for a temper rolling mill equipped with bridle rolls in the entry and exit section of the plant. The demand on the temper rolling automation system is to control the elongation coefficient. Thereby, the strip thickness is slightly reduced and the strip tensions in the entry and exit section of the mill are controlled within certain boundaries.
In contrast to the control approach usually encountered in the industrial practice the concept being proposed is characterized by the idea to use the bridle rolls as actuators for the elongation and master-speed control, whereas the hydraulic actuator of the mill stand and the main mill drive are used to take effect on the entry and exit strip tensions.
