In 1992 VOEST-ALPINE Stahl Linz (VASL) together with VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) started a research project to analyze the overall energy situation in the VASL plant in Linz and then to design and implement an energy management system (EMS) for iron and steel plants. The main idea was to take the VASL plant as a study object and example to provide a working EMS software application for the VASL and at the same time a generic prototypical EMS implementation for the VAI to serve as the basis for future/FURTHER EMS products.
The Christian Doppler (CD) Laboratory for Software Engineering from the University of Linz served as subcontractor for project since 1994, providing know-how in object-oriented software technology, mentoring in design and finally doing most of the implementation work where object oriented technology was used.
