Original Kurzfassung:
The dissertation here proposed studies the relation between recent technological developments (Automation Technologies (AT) and specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI)) and the organization of labour in Austria. It is conceptualized to result in two to three publications in relevant international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Economic Sociology or Political Economy. These publications in turn have different levels of analysis (Micro-Meso-Macro) and
are embedded within each other in order to establish one comprehensive picture. The dissertation will engage with specific gaps in the literature, which have been identified in the course of a literature review of a range of disciplines (Economics, History, Sociology) as well
as general, ongoing discussions about the impact of AI on work. The gaps are the following:
1.) There is limited evidence on how AI/AT are currently being implemented and how workers? labour-processes have changed where they were introduced ? qualitative case studies based on interviews and participant observation in Austrian industrial branches (such as food processing or the automotive supplier industry) will provide insights in this context.
2.) There has been relatively little discussion of how existing institutions, policies and social responses are shaping/have shaped the evolution of AI/AT and their adoption ? a critical history of Austrian industry and occupational structure, based on interviews and document analysis of representations of interest, will be used to learn about these influences.
3.) There are few considerations of how technological automation functions as a potential driver of market-concentration, how structural change shapes the development and implementation of AI/AT and what this means for work. For this specific point quantitative estimations will be used to learn about possible connections.
