Title:Wave propagation in fluid power systems - a comparison of direct Navier-Stokes and Lattice-Boltzmann approachesAuthor(s):Bernhard ManhartsgruberAbstract:Abstract Fluid power systems like hydraulic cylinder drives have traditionally been designed with the principle of hydrostatics in mind. In a number of modern applications like automotive fuel injection devices or fast switching digital hydraulics the wave propagation phenomena inside hydraulic components can no longer be neglected. Two groups of simulation tools are currently used in the fluid power industry: First, hydraulic simulation software for the overall systems simulation based upon a lumped parameter approach and augmented with wave propagation models for pipelines and hoses. And second, CFD codes for the analysis of local flow phenomena in components. Very often these CFD codes use standard turbulence models in situations where the flow is by no means fully developed. The present paper tries to evaluate the possibility of application of the Lattice-Boltzmann method to a simple prototypical example of heavily accelerated orifice flow. The LBM solution is compared against a direct numerical simulation based on the Navier-Stokes approach.Journal:Computers and FluidsPublisher:ELSEVIERISSN:0045-7930Page Reference:10 page(s)Publishing:12/2014Volume:(submitted for publication)
