But what are the essential criteria to select the best approach? In order to treat this question and to extend the application of an existing process model, this paper discusses criteria for product and project classification and introduces a classification matrix to provide a pre-development guideline for the emphasis on the different phases of a process model based on the phases of VDI 2221.
