Title:A Method for Localising the Projected Centre of Cylindrical Objects under Natural IlluminationAuthor(s):Norbert Eidenberger,  Daniel Schleicher,  Bernhard ZagarAbstract:In this paper we use an efficient approach to determine the projected centre of cylindrical objects in images. The method is based on a projection algorithm which makes use of image amplitude features. We introduce a symmetry analysis which uses global features of the image to determine the position of the object. Requirements concerning image and image content are defined which must be fulfilled in order to optimise the precision of the localisation process. These required conditions primarily involve the orientation of the object but do allow for an inhomogeneous illumination and a complex natural background. As an application example we use the developed algorithm to determine the position of wrapped steel coils which are loaded on railway cars. It is shown that it is possible to locate the centre of the coils although the images are taken under natural illumination.Booktitle:Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Sensing Technology 2010 (ICST'10)ISBN:978-0-473-16942-8Page Reference:page 227-232, 6 page(s)Publishing:6/2010
