Gas-solid flows have been included in a variety of processes, including gasification, chemical looping combustion, and catalytic oxidation. Due to a wide range of involved length scales, modelling of these flows is challenging. Two main modelling approaches have been used to analyse such gas-solid flows. On the one hand, the Eulerian-Eulerian approach (e.g. two-fluid model, TFM), where both phases are treated as interpenetrating continua and the particle collisions are considered by the kinetic theory of granular flows (KTGF), is preferably used for larger scales. On the other hand, the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach (e.g., CFD-DEM), where the gas phase is considered as continuous phase and the particles are tracked individually, is commonly used for more detailed descriptions. Although tracking the individual particles leads to accurate results, it needs more computational effort than the Eulerian-Eulerian approach.
This research aims to nest a detailed CFD-DEM model into a coarse TFM simulation of a mono-disperse gas-particle flow in a vertical channel. Thus, CFD-DEM acts as a magnification lens to obtain additional information about unresolved quantities, such as interparticle forces. Thereby, we use OpenFOAM in the case of TFM and the open source framework CFDEMcoupling in the case of CFD-DEM.
