This work presents a new solution to the problems accrued by spurious gas production on the electrodes of electroosmotic pumps (EOPs) because of electrolysis. The integration of an ion exchanging membrane directly into the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) substrates of the EOP enables the separation of the gas production due to electrolysis from the pumping channel. Therefore, the risk of gas bubbles blocking the glass fiber filter in the main channel is minimized. Additionally, due to this membrane the pump is able to suck in water itself. The EOP can be adapted to the requirements by using different channel geometries and can achieve both, high flowrates and high pressures.
