This contribution is concerned with the piezoelectrically induced actuation and control of beams. It has been shown that the actuating effect of the piezoelectric layer used for the distributed control of structural vibrations has to be considered as a distribution of the eigenstrains, which counteracts the load stresses . If the piezoelectric layer has a special spatial distribution, the deflection will vanish identically under the influence of a quasi-static distributed bending moment. The dynamic deflection of this intelligent structure will be suppressed sufficiently by use of an optimized control law. The controller needs the information of the so called "natural output", which is closely related to the beam deflection and to the input flow of energy caused by the space-wise distribution of the load. In order to guarantee the stability, the time derivative of the natural output is measurd and used for control, too.
